Pocket Money Diaries: Ellie

Pocket Money Diaries: Ellie

Welcome to Pocket Money Diaries, where we ask our GoHenry members how they spend, save, and earn their pocket money.

Name: Ellie

Age: 13

Weekly pocket money:

I get £7 a week and started getting pocket money when I was about 9, but I’ve been using GoHenry since I turned 10. I’ve increased the amount I save each week as I got older, and I’m really focused on my long-term savings now.

Weekly earnings:

I earn a bit extra by helping with bigger tasks like washing the car or doing extra chores, but my usual pocket money comes with the expectation that I’ll help around the house, like setting the table, washing up, and keeping my room tidy (well, semi-tidy!).

What are you saving for?

Right now, I’m using GoHenry’s weekly autosave to put £2.50 aside every week towards my university education. I want to save at least £2,000 to help cover my costs when I study fashion design or art. I’m also saving for things like driving lessons and, eventually, a home of my own. It feels good to know I’m preparing for the future and won’t have to rely on my parents to pay for everything.

What’s your best money-saving tip?

My best tip is to set up an Autosave. It’s easy because it goes straight into savings without me having to think about it, and it adds up over time. Also, keep track of your spending with the GoHenry app so you know what you can afford to save.

Weekly/monthly expenses:

I spend some of my pocket money on things like snacks or going out with friends, and I also like to save for things I enjoy, like art supplies or books. I’m careful about spending because I want to make sure  I can save for my bigger goals.

What kind of conversations do you have about money at home?

At home, we talk a lot about budgeting and saving. My parents encourage me to save for important things but also remind me to enjoy what I have. We discuss the cost of living and how to manage money wisely, which helps me understand how to plan for the future.

Does anything worry you about money?

Sometimes I worry about how expensive things like university and housing can be, but saving now makes me feel more in control. I also think about how rising costs might affect my family, so I want to be as independent as I can in the future.
